Belém Tower - Lisbon

The construction of a fortress on the north bank of the Tagus, to defend the bar, had been foreseen since the time of King João II. However, it was during the reign of King Manuel I that Francisco de Arruda, an architect with experience in defensive structures, designed and directed the execution works of the Tower dedicated to São Vicente, from early on designated as Torre de Belém.
